The 2012 Legislative Session, though difficult at times and not without shortcomings, was a success for the people of District 21. First, the legislature was able to add a permanent flood control structure at Bayou Chene to the state’s master plan and provided $25 million toward completion of Morganza to the Gulf.
In St. Mary Parish, $7.25 million was provided for Lake End Park Cabins, Charenton Canal Industrial Park, Berwick Sewers, Wedell-Williams, Cypremort Point, Franklin Canal, Baldwin Fire Station and Public Service Center, Morgan City and Patterson Drainage, Lake Palourde and Chez Hope.
Terrebonne Parish saw $11 million for the Houma Navigational Canal, Terrebonne Mental Health Center, Fletcher Technical College, an Integrated Petroleum Technologies Classroom, and flood protection and upgrades for Chabert Medical Center.
Lafourche Parish received $9.5 million for improvements to LA Hwy. 20, E.D. White Historic Site, Nicholls State University, and a new Tiger Drive Bridge.
And in Iberia Parish, $1.8 million was approved for improvements to Jeanerette City Park and city buildings and to acquire land for Progress Point Business Park.
It’s important to remember that these aren’t just dollar amounts and project titles, but necessary and important improvements to the lives of the people in this area.
